The Dangers of Nonstick Pans
Have you heard about the dangerous chemicals lurking in your cookware but don’t know where to start to find the safest non toxic cookware materials? It’s well known at this point that non-stick pans like those with Teflon are coated with PFAS chemicals, also known as “forever chemicals”. Not only do these chemicals pollute our drinking water, but they are found in the bloodstream and are extremely difficult to break down.
Though it may be tempting to use ceramic cookware as your nonstick replacement, most brands are ceramic pieces with a nonstick coating, as opposed to pure ceramic materials. Ceramic cookware is also a less durable option which can cause the nonstick coating to break down, chip, and end up in your food. Instead, keep reading to find out my go-to choices for the safest non toxic cookware materials.
My Top Three Choices for the Safest Nontoxic Cookware
Cast Iron
Cast Iron cookware has been around for thousands of years. It is a safe and extremely durable option that with the proper care can last a lifetime. I have two pieces of cast iron cookware that were handed down to me that are over 40 years old and function as well if not better than my newer pieces. Some people avoid cast iron cookware because they have heard it requires maintenance or are worried about how to care for it, but it is simple!
Cast iron needs to be washed by hand but despite what you make have been taught, you can actually use a small amount of mild soap to clean it. Next, simply dry it, and rub a light layer of oil on the pan, and you’re done! Cast iron cookware is also extremely affordable compared to most other options, and you can find brands like Lodge that are made right here in the USA. It is heavier than most cookware options, is best for low heat, and if you plan to use it for acidic foods like sauces or marinara, go with an enameled cast iron piece. With a little care, cast iron can make for a safe, affordable, non toxic cookware material that can be passed down to future generations.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is a great non toxic material for safe cooking. Good quality stainless steel cookware can also be long lasting but is a more expensive option than cast iron. It is a good option for cooking more acidic foods, and conducts heat evenly.
There are different grades when it comes to stainless steel cookware, so it is best to look for high-quality, food-grade stainless steel for a more durable piece of cookware. Brands like All Clad for a high end piece, or Cuisinart for a more affordable set, are both good options. Stainless steel is also a great option for bakeware like cookies sheets and muffin tins.
Glass
Glass is a great, low maintenance, non toxic bakeware option. Glass is affordable, easy to clean, and requires no special care. Pyrex is my go-to brand. Many pieces can serve as bakeware and food storage as well.
To Summarize
There are so many cookware brands out there consisting of many different materials that it can be overwhelming to find the best nontoxic cookware material to choose. My favorite options are cast iron, high-quality stainless steel, and glass. With these three nontoxic cookware materials you can build a cookware set that is functional, reliable, and safe.
It is more simple than you think to swap to a safer cookware set. Let me know what you use in the comments!

I love enameled cast iron, since I am not usually great at proper maintenance/cleaning of regular cast iron! I also love glass bakeware and use it all the time! Love the helpful information!!

Hi! Yes enameled cast iron is so convenient and low maintenance! Once you get used to using/cleaning traditional cast iron, it really becomes second nature!
